The appointed Senior FAS will own advanced technical engagements across high-impact discovery clusters:
- Torrey Pines Mesa & University City: Providing continuous assay guidance, technical seminars, and pilot studies for investigators across the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Scripps Research, Sanford Burnham Prebys, and the UC San Diego School of Medicine.
- Sorrento Valley, Sorrento Mesa & UTC Commercial Corridors: Partnering with target discovery, translational oncology, and biomarker development teams within top-twenty pharmaceutical research hubs and venture-backed oncology spin-outs.
- Extended Regional Outposts: Supporting key spatial biology programs throughout Orange County, Los Angeles, and the Carlsbad molecular diagnostics cluster.
Core Operational & Scientific Responsibilities
The Senior Field Application Scientist manages the entire scientific lifecycle of high-value instrument placements. The role sits at the intersection of consultative pre-sales assay design, onsite instrument commissioning, complex workflow optimization, and multi-modal computational support.
Pre-Sales Scientific Consultation & Technical Discovery
Collaborating closely with Regional Account Managers, the Senior FAS translates high-level customer experimental hypotheses into concrete multiplexed spatial imaging or single-cell sequencing workflows. Key duties include:
- Delivering rigorous technical presentations, platform comparisons, and scientific lunch-and-learn seminars to prospective principal investigators, core facility directors, and steering committees.
- Designing tailored proof-of-concept (POC) experiments, guiding biological sample selection (FFPE, fresh frozen, tissue microarrays), and evaluating target plexity needs against system performance boundaries.
- De-risking sales cycles by resolving technical objections related to reagent chemistry, multiplexing limits, cycle times, fluidics reliability, and optical resolution.
Post-Sales Implementation, Assay Optimization & Workflow Integration
Following capital equipment installation, the Senior FAS assumes ownership of customer technical onboarding, driving immediate platform adoption and time-to-first-data acceleration.
High-Dimensional Data Analysis & Troubleshooting Protocols
Advanced spatial and single-cell platforms generate massive, complex datasets requiring cross-disciplinary troubleshooting at the interface of chemistry, hardware, and algorithms:
- Providing wet-lab guidance on tissue preparation, sectioning, antigen retrieval, probe hybridization kinetics, antibody panel titration, and automated liquid-handling configurations.
- Diagnosing root causes of experimental anomalies, including non-specific fluorophore binding, tissue detachment, uneven fluidic dispensation, background autofluorescence, and optical focal drift.
Bioinformatic & Image Processing Pipeline Validation
The Senior FAS serves as first-line support for onboard instrument software, cloud-based data processing infrastructures, cell segmentation algorithms, and downstream bioinformatic integration. Duties include verifying spatial coordinate assignment, assisting with multiplexed image registration, and helping customers export standardized data matrices into secondary single-cell analysis environments.
Technical Profile & Assay Competencies
This role demands hands-on mastery over state-of-the-art life science instrumentation, multiplexed molecular assays, and cellular biology methodologies:
- Spatial Profiling Methodologies: Deep practical familiarity with in situ hybridization (ISH), in situ sequencing (ISS), cyclic immunofluorescence (cycIF), multiplexed ion beam imaging, or imaging mass cytometry.
- Single-Cell & Genomics Workflows: Direct experience handling single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), microfluidic partitioning platforms, targeted sequencing libraries, and Illumina NextSeq/NovaSeq run architectures.
- Microscopy & Imaging Systems: Operational knowledge of epifluorescence, confocal, or light-sheet microscopy, automated stage calibration, objectives, optical filter sets, and high-content imaging systems.
- Bioinformatics & Computational Skills: Functional familiarity with spatial data handling using Python or R, alongside packages such as Seurat, Scanpy, Giotto, QuPath, or CellProfiler.
Candidate Profile & Experience Requirements
Essential Technical & Professional Qualifications
- Education: Ph.D. or Master of Science degree in Molecular Biology, Genomics, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Immunology, Pathology, or a closely related biological discipline.
- Industry Experience: Minimum of three to five years of customer-facing field application support experience within a leading life science tools or molecular diagnostics manufacturer.
- Wet-Lab Domain Expertise: Demonstrated track record preparing, staining, and analyzing complex mammalian tissue sections (including human FFPE clinical biopsies and murine brain tissues).
- Field Mobility: Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% across the Southern California territory, with occasional travel for national conferences and internal corporate summits.

- Direct prior experience operating or supporting commercial spatial transcriptomic and spatial proteomic platforms.

Compensation, Incentives & Benefits Structure

- Base Salary: $150,000 to $175,000 annualized base compensation, commensurate with technical depth and industry tenure.
