Capital Equipment Sales Specialist – Life Sciences & Analytical Instrumentation
Our client, a premier developer of high-throughput bioanalytical instrumentation, automated liquid handling platforms, and advanced bioprocess monitoring hardware, has engaged our specialist recruitment practice to identify an accomplished Capital Equipment Sales Specialist. Based out of Carlsbad, California, this field-aligned role commands one of the most commercially critical and scientifically dense life science corridors in North America.
This is not a catalog consumables or reagent sales post. This commercial mandate demands a disciplined capital sales professional capable of prosecuting multi-month, high-ticket evaluation cycles ($150,000 to $1.2M+ ASP) across biopharmaceutical discovery, process development, analytical development, contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs), and elite academic research enterprises.
Territory Ecosystem & Market Context
The assigned territory spans the greater Southern California biotechnology hub, anchored in San Diego County (Carlsbad, Torrey Pines, Sorrento Valley, and University City) and extending into key accounts throughout Orange County and the Los Angeles biomedical cluster. You will interface directly with tier-one biopharmas, venture-backed cell and gene therapy startups, translation centers, and leading academic institutions such as UC San Diego, The Scripps Research Institute, and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
The regional market is experiencing unprecedented demand for orthogonal analytical validation, automated walkaway workflows, and continuous upstream process monitoring. Your primary objective is to displace legacy systems, capture unbudgeted institutional funding, and navigate complex institutional capital allocation cycles.
Core Responsibilities & Commercial Scope
As the primary commercial owner of this high-yield territory, you will lead the entire sales process from initial technical prospecting and workflow assessment through on-site instrumentation proof-of-concept (PoC), tender response, executive presentation, and final contract execution.
- Territory Pipeline Velocity: Build and sustain a rolling 4x pipeline across academic, biopharma, and industrial biotechnology accounts to consistently exceed multi-million dollar annual quotas.
- Workflow Solution Mapping: Conduct structured discovery sessions with Principal Investigators, Core Facility Directors, and Automation Engineers to identify analytical bottlenecks in sample preparation, titer quantification, and biophysical characterization.
- Tender & RFP Execution: Author highly detailed, competitive responses to Institutional Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and Public Procurement Tenders, working cross-functionally with Legal, Field Application Scientists (FAS), and Product Managers.
- Capital Deal Structuring: Negotiate complex commercial models including direct capital purchase, capital lease programs, reagent rental agreements, software-as-a-service (SaaS) multi-year licensing, and enterprise-wide master service agreements (MSAs).
- Funnel Management: Maintain rigorous CRM data integrity using advanced forecasting methodologies (such as MEDDICC or Challenger Sales) to accurately predict quarterly closes.
Technical Focus & Hardware Competencies
Success in this position requires the intellectual agility to discuss deep scientific instrumentation mechanisms and operational parameters without immediate reliance on field applications support.
Advanced Analytical & Bioprocess Technologies
You will represent an integrated suite of hardware, firmware, and optics, including:
- Multi-mode microplate readers with advanced TR-FRET, AlphaLISA, and high-speed luminescence detection.
- Automated robotic liquid handlers (pipetting channels 1 to 384, acoustic droplet ejection, microfluidic dispensing).
- Real-time label-free biomolecular interaction analysis systems (Surface Plasmon Resonance / Bio-Layer Interferometry).
- Benchtop to pilot-scale automated single-use bioreactor systems equipped with in-line Raman spectroscopy and capacitance sensors.
- High-content imaging platforms and automated digital holographic microscopy units.
Compliance, Data Integrity & Software Architecture
Capital deployments within regulated biopharma environments require fluency in data architecture. You will articulate your systems’ compliance with 21 CFR Part 11, automated audit trails, LIMS integration protocols (REST APIs, SiLA 2 standards), and complete IQ/OQ/PQ validation packages under GAMP 5 standards.
Multi-Stakeholder Account Engagement
Modern life science capital purchases involve matrixed decision-making units. You will routinely lead discussions with diverse stakeholders, translating instrumentation specifications into distinct value drivers:
- Bench Scientists & Postdocs: Highlighting throughput, walkaway time, intuitive graphical user interfaces, low maintenance overhead, and cross-contamination mitigation.
- Core Lab Directors & Department Chairs: Demonstrating instrument robustness, cross-departmental utility, multi-user scheduling software, and long-term service contract reliability.
- Procurement & Sourcing Executives: Providing ROI modeling, total cost of ownership (TCO) assessments, trade-in valuations, and favorable warranty/preventative maintenance terms.
- C-Suite & VP of R&D: Aligning capital outlays with enterprise goals: accelerating therapeutic milestone delivery, reducing time-to-IND submission, and standardizing global tech-transfer workflows.
Candidate Profile & Qualifications
Mandatory Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, Analytical Chemistry, or an equivalent life sciences discipline.
- Field Experience: Minimum of four years of demonstrated quota-carrying success selling high-value life science capital equipment ($100K+ transaction value).
- Territory Knowledge: Proven commercial track record and established professional networks within the San Diego / Southern California biotech ecosystem.
- Methodology: Demonstrated proficiency in structured enterprise sales methodologies (MEDDPICC, Challenger, Strategic Selling, or Miller Heiman).
- Mobility: Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% across the local Southern California territory, with occasional visits to manufacturing headquarters and international scientific congresses.
Preferred & Differentiating Background
- Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in an analytical or biological science discipline.
- Prior laboratory bench experience utilizing automated liquid handling, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, or SPR instruments.
- Documented finish in the top 10% of sales force / President’s Club recognition across consecutive fiscal years.
- Deep background in executing complex capital software/hardware configurations requiring enterprise IT and validation sign-offs.
Performance Indicators & Quota Expectations
Your performance will be evaluated against concrete commercial milestones:
- Attainment and over-achievement of assigned annual capital revenue targets (typically $3.0M to $5.5M depending on product class).
- Demonstration conversion rate: maintaining greater than 65% purchase conversion following an on-site product demonstration or extended trial.
- Strategic win rate on competitive displacements against primary tier-one market rivals.
- Accurate, bi-weekly forecast precision within a plus-or-minus 5% margin of error.
Total Rewards, Incentive Structure & Benefits
Our client provides an elite compensation structure engineered to aggressively reward top-quartile sales performers:
- Base Salary: Highly competitive base range of $135,000 to $165,000, calibrated to industry experience and demonstrated historical sales performance.
