Field Application Scientist – Spatial Omics & High-Throughput Genomic Platforms

A premier global recruitment consultancy specializing in scientific and commercial placements across the life sciences sector has been exclusively retained by a high-growth instrumentation and consumables pioneer. We are seeking a high-caliber Field Application Scientist (FAS) based in San Diego, California. This role serves as the central technical liaison between commercial sales, research and development, product management, and frontline researchers across biopharma, clinical research organizations, and world-class academic institutions.

Market Landscape & Southern California Territory Focus

The Southern California biotechnology corridor represents one of the dense epicenters of biomedical discovery globally. The successful candidate will drive technical adoption across core research clusters including Torrey Pines Mesa, Sorrento Valley, University City, and the Carlsbad biomanufacturing strip, with occasional secondary coverage extending across Orange County and the greater Los Angeles academic corridor.

Regional Account Ecology

This territory demands high scientific fluency. You will interface directly with principal investigators, core laboratory directors, automation engineers, and translational research teams across institutions such as UC San Diego, the Salk Institute, Scripps Research, Sanford Burnham Prebys, and prominent immuno-oncology and cell therapy biotechs located throughout Sorrento Mesa.

Core Responsibilities & Day-to-Day Execution

The Field Application Scientist is accountable for driving platform utilization, customer satisfaction, and reagent pull-through by providing best-in-class scientific consultation throughout the customer lifecycle.

Pre-Sales Scientific Validation

  • Partner with Regional Account Managers to formulate strategic account plans, deliver technical presentations, and lead technical deep dives with prospective buyers.
  • Execute highly controlled proof-of-principle studies, feasibility demonstrations, and pilot runs on customer-provided biological matrices.
  • Architect customized assay designs and computational workflows addressing specific translational biology and biomarker discovery questions.

Post-Sales Implementation & Workflow Integration

  • Oversee on-site assay wet-lab training, platform commissioning, and analytical workflow validation within customer facilities.
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) tailored to customer-specific experimental designs, including tissue handling, sample preparation, library construction, and automated reagent dispensing.
  • Facilitate comprehensive data interpretation sessions, guiding users through raw image analysis, spatial transcriptomic mapping, single-cell clustering, and differential expression analysis.
Workflow Troubleshooting & Rapid Customer Escalation Protocols

When unexpected assay performance or mechanical anomalies emerge, the FAS conducts immediate root-cause investigations. This includes systematically isolating variables across sample quality, reagent lot stability, pipetting mechanics, fluidics integrity, optical alignment, and software parameters to rapidly restore operational throughput.

Laboratory Safety, Assay Integrity, and Compliance Mandates

All laboratory operations, customer site interventions, and demonstration workflows must strictly comply with Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) handling guidelines, chemical hygiene protocols, and institutional review board requirements for clinical tissue specimens.

Technical Depth & Platform Architecture

This position requires deep hands-on fluency in cutting-edge molecular biology techniques, high-parameter cellular imaging, and multi-omics analytical pipelines.

Primary Platform Methodologies

  • Spatial Biology & In Situ Analysis: Deep familiarity with spatial transcriptomics and multiplexed protein profiling technologies such as 10x Genomics Visium/Xenium, Akoya PhenoCycler, NanoString GeoMx/CosMx, or equivalent multiplexed fluorescence imaging systems.
  • Single-Cell & Next-Generation Sequencing: Proven bench experience with single-cell library generation (Chromium platform), Illumina sequencing ecosystems (NextSeq 2000, NovaSeq 6000/X Plus), and long-read methodologies (PacBio, Oxford Nanopore).
  • Tissue Processing & Histology: Advanced proficiency with formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) sample preparation, fresh frozen cryosectioning, automated immunohistochemistry (IHC), and multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF).
  • Bioinformatics & Image Informatics: Familiarity with spatial data structures, Python or R-based data analysis pipelines (such as Seurat, Scanpy, Giotto), and proprietary image analysis engines.

Candidate Profile & Experience Requirements

Minimum Mandatory Qualifications

  • Education: Master of Science (M.S.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Genetics, Bioengineering, or a related biological sciences discipline.
  • Technical Experience: A minimum of three years of direct hands-on laboratory experience utilizing advanced molecular biology techniques, spatial omics, high-content imaging, or single-cell genomics workflows.
  • Field/Customer Interface: At least one year of customer-facing experience as an FAS, Technical Support Specialist, Core Facility Manager, or Application Specialist within the life sciences tools sector.
  • Mobility: Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% locally within San Diego County and the broader Southern California region, with occasional domestic travel for corporate meetings and national scientific congresses.
  • Valid Driver License: Clean, active driving record required for regional territory travel.

Preferred Technical Attributes

  • Ph.D. with substantial post-doctoral or industry experience in oncology, neurobiology, or immunology workflows.
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting automated liquid handlers (Tecan, Hamilton, Beckman Coulter) configured for high-throughput library prep.
  • Established professional network across the San Diego academic and commercial biopharma community.
  • Prior experience conducting Installation Qualification / Operational Qualification (IQ/OQ) protocols on complex bio-imaging instrumentation.

Performance Indicators & Professional Growth

The success of the Field Application Scientist is measured through concrete commercial and technical performance metrics evaluated quarterly:

  • Customer Satisfaction (CSAT): Evaluation of post-training customer surveys and long-term customer retention metrics.
  • Reagent Pull-Through Velocity: Rate of consumable adoption and throughput expansion across installed base accounts.
  • Pre-Sales Conversion Ratio: Win-rate on competitive demonstrations and proof-of-concept evaluations.
  • Time-to-Resolution: Mean time required to resolve advanced technical escalations in conjunction with Field Service Engineers.

Compensation Structure & Corporate Benefits

Our client provides an exceptional total compensation package structured to reward technical excellence and commercial impact:

  • Base Salary: $130,000 to $160,000 annually, calibrated to relevant industry experience and educational background.
